Installation Tips and Best Practices for ACPs

Aluminium composite panels, also known as ACPs, are becoming more and more popular in contemporary architecture. This is because they are versatile, long-lasting and look good. These panels have two aluminium sheets that are connected to a core that isn’t made from aluminium. It’s lightweight but strong at the same time – perfect for different uses. 

Planning and Preparation

Before you start the installation, making a plan and preparing thoroughly is very important. First, measure where you want to install it carefully and then make a detailed map of how everything will be laid out. This makes sure there’s less waste material while also ensuring that your process of installing goes smoothly. Take into account elements like the direction of panels, positions of joints and any barriers that might need special focus, such as windows or doors.


Next, collect all essential tools and materials. You usually need a circular saw with a fine-toothed blade, a drill containing suitable bits, a leveller, and measuring tape, along with safety stuff like gloves and protective glasses. Make sure you have sufficient panels, fastening items, plus any needed sealants or adhesive before starting the task.

Handling and Storage

It’s very important to manage and store aluminium composite panels correctly in order to keep their quality and look. You should always put these panels in a place that is dry and shielded from sunlight, making sure they are safe from water or direct light. Place them flatly stacked one above the other on an even surface; also, ensure there is something covering between each panel so no scratches or harm can reach it.


When you are shifting panels, raise them gently instead of rubbing them together. This safety measure aids in averting surface scratches and keeps the panels’ perfect state intact. For bigger panels, it is wise to let two individuals manage them so as not to bend or twist during transit.

Cutting and Shaping

To cut aluminium composite panels accurately, you must have the appropriate tools. A circular saw blade with fine teeth that is made for cutting non-ferrous metals should be used. To reduce the possibility of chips or damage to the surface, always make sure that the completed side of the panel is upwards when cutting it. For intricate cuts or shapes, consider using a jigsaw with a metal-cutting blade.


For making holes for fixings, employ a drill bit that is particularly made for metal. Begin with a tiny initial hole and slowly enlarge the size until you reach your desired diameter. This method aids in stopping the panel from breaking or splitting around the hole.

Installation Techniques

Setting up aluminium composite panels can change based on the particular use and local construction laws. However, some common rules suitable for most settings exist. Start by making sure that the base is clean, dry, and structurally robust. Before setting up the panel, it is necessary to sort out any abnormalities in the substrate so as to confirm a flat and balanced surface.


For uses on the outside, it is very important to make a rainscreen system by keeping a tiny air space between the panels and the construction of buildings. This open area provides correct ventilation and control of dampness, which increases the life duration for both panels as well as the structure beneath them.

Fastening Methods

Many ways exist to secure aluminium composite panels, like using obvious mechanical fasteners, hidden fastener systems and stickiness bonding. Which way of securing your use relies on things such as what the project needs are, rules for buildings in your area and looks that you prefer.


Visible machine materials like screws or rivets are safe and not expensive, but they can affect how it looks. Hidden screw systems give a clean, smooth look but usually need more difficult ways to install. Glue bonding can make a surface without bumps, but you need to prepare the surface well, and it might have problems in some weather conditions.

Sealing and Finishing

You must seal it correctly to stop water from getting in and make sure the installation lasts long. Use good-quality, weather-proof sealing materials that work well with aluminium composite panels. Focus more on connections, edges, and any places where something gets through the panel system. Apply sealant in a continuous bead, ensuring complete coverage without gaps or voids.


To give it a refined appearance, think about including trim items or custom-made flashings to cover visible borders and make neat changes between panels. These final additions not only improve the visual charm but also offer extra safeguard from water seeping in.

Maintenance and Care

Though aluminium composite panels are recognized for their long-lasting and low-care demands, the right care can greatly prolong their life span and maintain their look. Regularly check these panels for any signs of damage, loose screws or failing sealants. Handle any problems quickly to avoid more big destruction.


You should regularly clean the panels with gentle soap and water, not using harsh cleaners or tools that may scratch them. If there are hard-to-remove stains, you can refer to what the manufacturer suggests for suitable cleaning products and methods.


When you adhere to these tips and superior practices for installation, it helps in having a triumphant and enduring setup of aluminum composite panels. Always keep in mind to seek advice from local building regulations as well as manufacturer guidelines that are specific to your project requirements. Aluminium composite panels can provide an eye-catching and resilient exterior if proper planning, implementation, and upkeep are ensured.
